A word from the artist
There are three parts to this story. The I. The You. And the Us.
Why three parts? Because identity is not static. It moves, stretches, folds in on itself, and shows up differently depending on who’s watching and who’s being seen. We wanted to look at Blackness not as a single truth, but as something living. Something shaped by memory, by conversation, by being in a relationship.
Each piece invites the viewer into a layered conversation, both personal and collective. These are not performances. They are reflections. Sometimes quiet. Sometimes raw. Sometimes unsure. What does it mean to be Black? The answers shift depending on who’s asking. But what we know is that Blackness is not absence or otherness. It is presence, variation, history, and becoming.
Influenced by oral history, digital archives, and traditions of community storytelling, this project does not search for a final answer. It makes space. For grief. For kinship. For complexity. For voices that are rarely centered but always present.
